A Prophecy

During his studies at Christian Life School of the Bible in Rockford, Illinois, started while in his late fifties c.1977 Johnie Baxter wrote a paper for a Old Testament Survey class assignment. It was to be written in the style of one of the Old Testament prophets regarding current events. It was found among the papers he had kept for all these years, including six moves to new places to live, in an old filing cabinet. Even though it was written over 30 years ago, it has a remarkable up-to-date 2010 flavor to it. This is what he wrote:

A Current Prophecy in the Style of an Old Testament Prophet

The words of John, who was among the tradesmen of Rockford, which he saw concerning the lawmakers of the United States in the days of Carter, then President, while Hussein was King of Jordan.

This saith the Lord, "For three transgressions of the Washington legislators and for four, I will not turn away punishment thereof, because while seeking office you make brave and great promises which you have no intention to fulfill; speaking lies unto the people for the sake of obtaining office only; promising full employment to all who want to work, a lowering of taxes, and prosperity for all. You say, 'We will cut down on big government.' But when elected, you vote to start more government agencies, putting more people into government, adding to the great burden of taxes." Thus saith the Lord, "I will punish all liars, your feathered nest will become a burned out dwelling for your lying unto the people."

Thus saith the Lord, "For three transgressions of the Illinois state legislators and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof, because while you were seeking office you said, 'We get the message, the people want state government spending cut.' But three weeks after election you voted a forty percent increase in salary for state legislators. Because of this, the people will not forget, your seat will be taken by another."

Thus saith the Lord, "For three transgression of Carter and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof, because you also made promises which you could not keep. This is double trouble for you. You say, 'I am a born again Christian.' Your plans and hopes shall become as naught before the people. The people will not believe you."

Thus He showed me, while lying upon my bed, a wall built with a plumb line, straight and true. This wall represents My word, it is straight and true. I will punish all liars, those men of high standing shall not escape.

The said Dave, the Dean of Christian Life School of the Bible, "John, you have spoken against men of high estate." Then answered John and said to Dave, "The truth must be said. I am no prophet, neither am I a prophet's son, but a tradesman seeking a passing grade in Old Testament Survey."
